Purpose:

The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the Manufacturing Systems Design Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking a research professional with a design for additive manufacturing, topology optimization and other design optimization experience. The applicant will work with the development of novel design techniques that utilize advanced manufacturing techniques to optimize component performance in clean energy applications and beyond.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead R&D projects related to systems design
  • Develop novel concepts and ideas
  • Research the boundaries of design for additive manufacturing through the application of algorithms including topology optimization.
  • Develop analysis and optimization techniques using finite element and cfd analysis to optimizing the performance of additively manufactured components.
  • Write journal articles discussing the results of the research
  • Prepare and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at technical meetings.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD level engineering degree preferably in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Experience in Mechanical Design
  • Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes and topology optimization knowledge
  • Ability to problem solve and find solutions to challenging engineering problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to assist in the preparation of reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years of experience working in R&D
  • Basic programming skills
  • Mechanical design experience
  • Experimental design experience
