Associate Technical Staff Member - Manufacturing Systems Design

Purpose:

The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the ­­­­Manufacturing Systems Design Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking a technical professional staff member to conduct projects, expand research, and assist in the development of projects to support the design of additive manufacturing systems and contribute to the R&D portfolio. The applicant will help support the complete MDF research portfolio with analysis and topological optimization of systems and components

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

You will:

  • Support R&D projects in additive manufacturing (AM)
  • Design components for new robotic AM systems
  • Integration of sensors and components
  • Testing and verification of new systems
  • Support efforts to improve the AM process efficiency with focus on
    • System integration
    • Process development
    • High throughput
    • Energy efficiency
  • Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, industry, and utilities;
  • Prepare research results and reports for sponsors, peer reviewers, and others 

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors level engineering degree with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience 
  • High level skills in computer aided design (CAD), Solidworks preferred
  • Ability to directly apply scientific methods to solve engineering problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building.
  • Frequent domestic travel and possibly international travel is expected in this position.
  • Some activities may require access to technology that is subject to export control requirements and/or national security interests.  Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

 

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic programming 
  • Experience with industrial robots
  • Understanding of the AM process and its challenges
  • Knowledge of relevant public and private stakeholders is desired.
