Overview:
We are seeking a Research Associate who will focus on conducting research in the field of computer vision for directed energy deposition/hybrid manufacturing. This position resides in the Manufacturing Systems design group in the Manufacturing Science Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our research team, you will…
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conduct fundamental research in the field of computer vision for directed energy deposition.
- Interface with industrial partners to understand the development need for computer vision in computer numerical control (CNC) systems.
- Generate in-situ data-fed computer aids to help operators during additive manufacturing processes.

Basic Qualifications:
- A M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in directed energy deposition technology
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in Subtractive (machining) manufacturing
- A minimum of 1 year of experience with computer aided manufacturing software
Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
