Overview: 

We are seeking an R&D Staff who will focus on the characterization of structural metals manufactured through various additive manufacturing technologies. The research will focus on the fundamental scientific and technology developments necessary for three-dimensional characterization of these materials across length-scales to enable the construction of process-structure-property correlations. This position resides in the Deposition Science & Technology Group in the Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Sciences Technology Directorate (ESTD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

As part of our research team, you will be among team members based at the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF), the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) first facility established to provide affordable and convenient access to R&D expertise, facilities, and tools to facilitate rapid adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies including additive manufacturing of structural metals. To improve the capabilities of this facilities existing characterization center in the area of multilength scale 3D materials characterization, the candidate will lead the efforts for developing techniques and protocols for the characterization and development of process-structure-property relationships. You will perform the fundamental science for enabling better understandings of metals processed through AM modalities. Further, the position requires close collaboration with industrial collaborators to achieve common research goals.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Perform advanced characterization of AM processed structural materials across length scales using computed tomography (CT), SEM, EBSD, EDS, and FIB serial sectioning, etc.
  • Develop new methodologies and techniques for advanced three-dimensional characterization at the sub mm length-scale.
  • Develop new methodologies and techniques for linking characterization data across length-scales for developing the understanding of true three-dimensional microstructures.
  • Work closely with technical support staff in the characterization center and provide oversight of workflow through the center. 
  • Ability to work closely with diverse backgrounds such as data sciences to enable the generation of algorithms for rapid processing of experimental acquired characterization data for aiding in the development of process-structure linkages.
  • Work with industrial collaborators in the center to achieve common programmatic research goals for certification and qualification of AM structural metals.
  • Work with relevant Senior Research Staff and Program Managers to develop a vision and identify needs for advanced characterization of structural AM materials.
  • Develop partnerships with key leaders in metals additive manufacturing (AM) community from industry, academia, and government to further enhance the capabilities of metals powder bed AM at ORNL
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Materials Science, Weld Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Metallurgy, or a closely related field
  • A minimum of four years of experience in advanced characterization of materials
  • Understanding of the basic principles of metallurgy including phase transformations, strengthening mechanisms, phase diagrams, crystallography, etc.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international, scientific audience
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
