Overview:
We are seeking a senior research professional to lead world class capabilities related to manufacturing science and technology associated with the ORNL and DOE mission. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.
This position are within Manufacturing Automation and Controls Group within the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD), which houses Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and Carbon Fiber Technology Facility.
Purpose
Help lead teams toward achieving both the overall mission of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and those goals specific to the Manufacturing Science Division through advanced research in automation and controls, including flexible industrial automation, machine learning, sensor processing, machine vision, and/or human machine interaction.
Main Duties / Responsibilities
* Work to create partnerships with industry, universities, and national laboratories to identify and lead research proposals in response to solicitations, identifying where ORNL experience and capabilities can make an impact
* Prepare proposals and associated materials as required for delivery of custom solutions
* Communicate research results through presentations, reports, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journals
* Provide scientific direction, guidance, and mentorship to fellow scientists and staff as a key member of the Manufacturing Automation and Controls Group
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
* A Doctorate in an Engineering discipline, Computer Science, or a related field
* Expertise in sensing and perception for controls, automation, and/or robotics
* Demonstrated experience in leading R&D teams
* Demonstrated ability to work both individually and as part of a diverse team
* Excellent communication skills as evidenced by previous reports, papers, and presentations
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience applying sensor fusion methods to manufacturing processes and/or manufacturing-related automation
* Expertise in advanced (high fidelity, high bandwidth) perception, localization, and state estimation
* Demonstrated leadership within the controls and/or manufacturing community
