We are seeking a technical professional to join our team advancing capabilities related to manufacturing science and technology associated with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Department of  Energy (DOE) mission. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. This position resides in the Manufacturing Automation and Controls Group in the Manufacturing Sciences Division of the Energy Science and Technology Directorate at ORNL, which houses the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) and Carbon Fiber Technology Facility (CFTF).


As part of our research team, you will work toward advancing the state of the art in manufacturing and disseminating those advancements through publications, presentations, and interactions with industry partners. Initially, the focus will be on large-scale metal additive manufacturing through advancements in system design, controls, and/or sensing and sensor processing. There is, however, significant opportunity to work with teams from other projects both within MSD and ORNL, more broadly.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct R&D projects and support the expansion of R&D in Direct Energy Deposition (DED) and metal additive manufacturing (AM)
  • Support efforts to improve the metal DED AM process efficiency with focus on system integration, design, and process optimization and control
  • Interact with materials scientists to advance understanding of DED-based metallurgy
  • Develop new applications of robotics and automation in manufacturing and other areas of the ORNL mission
  • Mentor students and interns
  • Prepare and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, members of local, state, and federal governments, and to a general audiences at technical meetings


Basic Qualifications:

  • An M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields with a focus on controls, robotics, automation, or mechatronics
  • Understanding of foundational automation and robotics concepts including inverse/forward kinematics, motion control, process control, and system integration
  • Programming skills necessary to implement robotics concepts in software
  • Basic CAD modelling skills
  • Ability to directly apply scientific methods to solve engineering problems
  • Flexibility and willingness to explore, adapt, and synthesize aspects of other scientific fields into the needs of large-scale metal additive manufacturing
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Programming experience in C/C++
  • Programming experience in LabView
  • Knowledge of CAD software and Design for Additive Manufacturing
  • Experience with industrial robots
  • Understanding of additive manufacturing and its challenges
  • Experience with TIG/MIG and/or laser welding processes
