Technical Staff Member - Manufacturing Systems Design

Purpose:

The Department of Energy Manufacturing Demonstration Facility and the ­­­­Manufacturing Systems Design Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) are seeking a technical professional staff member to conduct projects, expand research, and assist in the development of projects to support the design of additive manufacturing systems and contribute to the R&D portfolio. The applicant will help support the complete MDF research portfolio with analysis and topological optimization of systems and components

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

You will:

• Conduct R&D projects and support the expansion of R&D in additive manufacturing
• Design new robotic systems for AM
• Integration of sensors and components
• Testing and verification of new systems
• Support efforts to improve the AM process efficiency with focus on
  • System integration
  • Process development
  • High throughput
  • Energy efficiency
• Test new methods and improvements with industrial application on the MDF hybrid systems.
• Mentor students and interns;
• Network and develop collaborative R&D with other groups and divisions internally and with DOE, industry, and utilities;
• Prepare and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at technical meetings.

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelors level engineering degree with a minimum of five years of relevant experience 
• High level skills in computer aided design (CAD), Solidworks preferred
• Ability to directly apply scientific methods to solve engineering problems
• Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and to prepare reports, proposals, publications and journal articles is required.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support team building.
• Frequent domestic travel and possibly international travel is expected in this position.
• Some activities may require export control and/or national security interests.  Therefore, U.S. citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Basic programming 
• Experience with industrial robots

• Understanding of the AM process and its challenges
• Knowledge of relevant public and private stakeholders is desired.
