Temporary Technician - Additive Manufacturing Metallography Laboratory

Overview:

We are seeking a metallography laboratory technician who will focus on sample preparation and basic characterization of Additively Manufactured (AM) specimens.  This position will require the employee to be 100% on site and use metallographic equipment for the preparation of samples. This position will also require the use of optical microscopes, etching, and basic mechanical testing equipment for primary characterization of materials.

 

This position resides within the Deposition Science and Technology Group, Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Science and Technology Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).   As part of our research team, you will work with ORNL’s world-class experts and have access to state-of-the-art facilities to make major contributions to R&D projects involving AM. You will also be expected to perform installation and maintenance of lab equipment, preparation of samples for other groups within the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF), interact with visitors, train/authorize equipment users, and contribute to on-going technical/safety discussions.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Support all sample preparation activities in the Metallography Laboratory at MDF
  • Sectioning of various materials (using low and high-speed saws)
  • Mounting and polishing various materials
  • Etching samples utilizing various chemicals (Nitric Acid, Hydrochloric Acid and Hydrofluoric Acid)
  • Imaging of metallographic samples using optical microscopes
  • Maintain lab equipment, facilities, and systems so that they are ESH&Q compliant
  • Maintain documentation of samples within the lab via computer database
  • Support lab operations through material ordering and tracking activities
  • Perform all work in a safe manner

 

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in a team environment
  • Experience working in a metallography or similar laboratory
  • Experience working with chemicals and other hazardous materials
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively balance time to accomplish multiple tasks or assignments
  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Material Science (or a closely related field)

 

Special Requirements:

Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer. This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
