Quantum Materials and Quantum Information Science - R&D Associate

Date: May 4, 2022

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 8170

Overview:

We are looking for a Research Staff Member in the Quantum Heterostructures Group. In this role, you will conduct research on quantum information science at the intersection between topological quantum materials, superconducting quantum devices, and spin-based quantum sensors. You will perform research to reveal and control the fundamental processes that drive qubits and quantum sensors based on topological and superconducting materials. You will be responsible for superconducting device design and fabrication, for quantum transport measurements performed at mK temperatures, and for cryogenic quantum optical microscopies of quantum materials and devices. This position resides in the Quantum Heterostructures Group, Materials Science and Technology (MST) Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

This position is supported by the Department of Energy Quantum Science Center, a National Quantum Information Science Research Center. Research Staff appointed to the Quantum Science Center will engage with a network of universities, national laboratories, and industry to overcome key roadblocks in quantum state resilience, controllability, and ultimately the scalability of quantum technologies to realize the quantum future.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The expected duties and responsibilities include some but not necessarily all of the following:

  • Participate in new and ongoing cross-cutting research at the intersection of quantum sensing, quantum materials science, and quantum computing.
  • Formulate novel solutions to problems of national interest and plan and execute the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.
  • Lead and take part in multiple R&D projects.
  • Maintain and perform research with closed cycle dilution refrigerators operating at mK temperatures
  • Deliver science to DOE funded programs
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in the physical sciences, or a related discipline
  • Experience with low temperature materials
  • Experience in experimental quantum sensing, quantum materials science, and/or quantum device physics

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong record of productive and creative research proven by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at major conferences
  • Experience with dilution refrigeration and superconducting magnets
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international scientific audience
  • Ability to work with a measure of autonomy, but also in a team environment to interact effectively with your colleagues, develop new collaborations to improve scientific understanding, and accept flexibility in research assignments
  • Familiarity with numerical data analysis and customization of control software (Labview/Matlab/Python)

Special Requirements

Three letters of reference are required and can be uploaded to your profile or emailed directly to PSDrecruit@ornl.gov.  Please include the title of the position in the subject line.

This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
