Overview: 

The Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Division (NEFCD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks applications for an Associate Chemical Engineer with three or more years of experience in chemistry or chemical engineering. The successful candidate(s) must possess the skills and technical capabilities required to perform reactive gas research including the ability to fabricate, operate, and maintain gas handling manifolds. Experience with working around toxic and corrosive chemicals and radioactive materials is desirable. This position will support ORNL scientific staff conducting research and chemical operations associated with the reactive gas studies in the Fuel Cycle Chemical Technology (FCCT) within the Fusion and Fission Energy and Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Help design, assemble, maintain, and operate gas manifold systems to support various testing and measurement operations
  • Set up and operate various temperature and gas parameter sensors and instruments
  • Handle radioactive materials
  • Assist in the production of isotopic standards
  • Perform routine spreadsheet data entry and word processing tasks
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary, multi-laboratory environment consisting of chemists, physicists, experimentalists, and engineers/physicists developing and demonstrating applied research
  • Contribute to technical papers, journal articles, reports, and proposals for internal and external release
  • Communicate regularly with internal and external collaborators
  • Demonstrate results-oriented behavior, be able to work independently and in a team environment, thoroughly document work performed, and communicate work performed to peers and project sponsors

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, electrical, mechanical, or mechatronics.
  • >3 years of related experience
  • Ability to obtain and hold a Q clearance

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with radioactive materials and a DOE safety culture
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and self-starter
