Job Description: 

The Grid Components and Controls Group (GCC) in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructures Division (EEID) within the Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking to fill an Associate R&D Staff position to perform R&D in modeling, simulation, analysis, and/or control of emerging power grids with high penetration of renewables, storages and power electronics. Primary research focus will be developing novel or improved algorithms/approaches for (white-box or black-box) modeling and computing power system transients,  analyzing architectural or topological aspects and control dynamics for resilience and stability, operating and controlling the grid in a decentralized or distributed way. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education.

 

The GCC Group supports the Energy Department (DOE), including the Office of Electricity (OE), Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response (CESER), and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), on the mission of electricity grid resilience, reliability, energy security, environmental stewardship, and affordability of energy supplies. The GCC Group conducts advanced grid research, development, testing, and evaluation. In addition to the control-centric R&D utilizing its Distributed Energy Communications and Control (DECC) facility and Advanced Grid Control Lab, the group also performs activities in power cable testing using its Powerline Conductor Accelerated Testing (PCAT) facility, microgrid development using the COMMANDER Testbed, newl grid components (e.g. power flow controller, adaptive protection, smart inverters, etc.) development, hardware-in-the-loop simulations, grid macro-analysis, and market impact assessment of new technologies.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing research services and executing research projects to support one or more of GCC’s grid research themes. In addition, the candidate will communicate and influence stakeholders (including internal and external, government and private sector) on new concepts, R&D opportunities, and results, and work collaboratively with other ORNL staff.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Requires a Ph.D. (Electrical Engineering), an M.S. with a minimum of two years’ experience, or a B.S. with a minimum of four years experience.
  • Successful candidates should have power systems, power electronics, and/or control research background.
  • The candidate should have excellent oral skills to make presentations and written communication skills to prepare reports and proposals.
  • The candidate should have a strong commitment to scientific integrity and strong interpersonal skills to support teamwork.    

 

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Strong research experience in electromagnetic transient modeling, stability analysis, and/or inverter system control design for utility power system applications.
  • Previous relevant research publications on top-ranking journals are desired.
  • Proficiency in commercially available (or open-source) power systems and power electronics analysis and simulation software tools.
  • Experience in large-scale power system modeling, computing, simulation, and analysis.
  • Experience in data-driven approaches, e.g. black-box modeling, machine learning, etc. 
  • Experience in MATLAB, Python, C/C++ programming.
