Computational Systems Biologist
Date: May 19, 2023
Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830
Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory
Requisition Id 10792
Purpose:
The Biosciences Division (BSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is focused on advancing science and technology to better understand complex biological systems and their relationship with the environment. BSD has expertise and special facilities in genomics, computational systems biology, microbiology, microbial ecology, biophysics and structural biology, and plant sciences. Computational systems biology research includes methods development and use to analyze large scale phenomics, omics, greenhouse, field, and clinical datasets to derive insights and hypotheses suitable for further experimental validation and to improve researchers’ ability to further advance understanding of biological systems. We develop and apply computational methods to explore biological processes at all levels of life systems organization from atomistic to ecological scales. The collection of omics, phenotyping and environmental data, and automation of its analysis and discovery, is becoming increasingly important as the scale of experiments grow and diversify for projects at ORNL including the Center for Bioenergy Innovation, Plant-Microbe Interfaces, Secure Ecosystem Engineering, and Design, BioScales, Integrated Pennycress Resilience projects, funded by the DOE, and biomedical projects, funded by the NIH and VA, among other efforts that also include access to suitable large scale computational resources. In this position, you will be taking an important role in the development of phenotype collection methods and devices and the associated data and machine learning infrastructures in conjunction with existing and new projects.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Development and support of data collection, modeling, and integration, along with associated computational and machine/deep learning environments and interfaces for systems biology and phenomics research.
- Analyze large biological data sets to build accurate predictive models of biological processes and publish original work.
- Collaborate with internal and external researchers to analyze and interpret novel results using newly derived methods.
- Contribute to ongoing projects in the group and successfully define and develop their own projects.
- Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
- A masters degree and work experience in a computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology or related field.
- Strong computational science expertise, and a solid background in scientific programming, and computational techniques are required.
- Familiar with large-scale data analysis and understanding of data models to represent biological concepts.
- Computer programming experience, ideally including C, perl and python programming languages.
- Proficiency developing robust software for large, interdisciplinary, collaborative projects. ● Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to a scientific audience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A doctoral degree and post-doctoral experience in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology or related field is preferred.
- Familiarity with phenomics and omics techniques such as RNA-seq, proteomic
