The Cyber Resilience and Intelligence Division in the National Security Sciences Directorate of Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applications to the position of Computer Vision & Image Processing Research Associate.


The Augmented Analyst Intelligence (A2I) group at ORNL performs research and development of tools and methods to augment an analyst’s accuracy, effectiveness, speed, confidence, and ability to process large amounts of multi-modal data. We work closely with domain experts in a variety of domains, including cyber security and intelligence analysis. A2I's activities involve first-class interdisciplinary research with other research groups at ORNL, collaborations with private industry and academic partners across the nation, and mission-specific support for national security sponsors. Our staff includes software engineers, mathematicians, researchers in image processing and machine learning, and UX developers. We publish papers on our applied research projects, but always with an eye on improving the national security of the nation by deploying new solutions.

The Research Associate will assist in developing research and development to advance image processing and computer vision tailored to challenging remote sensing imagery for national security missions. They will be fully integrated in a dynamic team and an auspicious environment not only to develop new solutions for ongoing projects but also to lead the research to advance the ORNL portfolio in the field.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead efforts for impactful R&D
  • Disseminate research results via presentation, reports, and peer-reviewed publications
  • Ensure compliance with development standards used by the current teams
  • Contribute to business development by participating in proposal writing


Basic Requirements:

  • Requires an MS and 4+ years relevant experience or equivalent, Ph.D. and 2+ years relevant experience or equivalent in computer vision, image processing, or closely related field.
  • Programming skills (not only prototyping) in any language
  • Possess excellent interdisciplinary skills, knowledge of relevant public and private stakeholders is desirable
  • Possess excellent communications capabilities (for making presentations), strong writing skills for preparing reports, proposals, and publications/journal articles, and strong people skills to support team building and leadership.
  • A strong commitment to scientific integrity is an important requirement
  • Self-disciplined work ethic and eagerness to tackle challenging research problems.
  • Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license, which requires U.S. Citizenship or LPR (Lawful Permanent Residence.)
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in working with formats such as NITF, GeoTIFF, and libraries like GDAL, NITRO
  • Candidates who have contributed to open-source projects are preferred
  • Experience with version control
  • Experience with Agile project management, SCRUM, etc.
