The Controls Integration Group at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) seeks a Control System Software Engineer who will focus on SNS control system infrastructure and tools. This position resides in the Controls Integration Group in the Research Accelerator Division, Neutrons Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The group is responsible for maintaining and improving fully integrated control systems for the SNS accelerator to deliver safe, high reliability beam to the target. Typical systems are based on PLC, VME or MicroTCA hardware integrated using the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control Systems (EPICS).


This position reports to Controls Integration Group Leader. The group is currently focusing on modernizing the control system environment and systems. Ongoing upgrade projects are replacing VME solutions with custom MicroTCA applications, upgrading applications towards EPICS7 and PVAccess protocol, and improving control room operators experience with latest software tools.


The position will support this ongoing modernization efforts by developing low-level drivers for FPGA applications, integrating these applications into EPICS environment, developing software tools for assisted FPGA development, preparing and maintaining Linux build procedures for standardized MicroTCA deployments.


Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, optimize and maintain Linux kernel drivers and tools for custom FPGA applications
  • Work closely with hardware engineers and provide software support for agile FPGA and software development
  • Participate in entire project lifecycle: capturing requirements, development, testing, deployment and maintenance.
  • Develop and document procedure for building custom Linux images for standardized deployment of embedded IO controllers running on MicroTCA hardware
  • Research and implement MPSoC designs for real-time control loop applications
  • Engage in open-source software projects and collaborations
  • Present SNS custom projects at professional collaborations, like conferences and workshops.
  • Perform work in accordance with SNS work control procedures and safety guidelines.
  • This position operates during typical daytime office hours, but some off-hours and weekend support is required to support the 24/7 operational needs of the SNS.
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in engineering, science, physics or related discipline; and 8 years of applicable experience
  • Proficient in Linux kernel drivers development
  • Demonstrated experience with embedded systems
  • Experience with standard Linux packaging mechanism and custom build images
  • Experience with at least one more applicable programming language, such as C++, Python, Java or similar.
  • Experience with one or more hardware-software communication interfaces: UART, I2C, Modbus, PCIe
  • Proficiency with collaborative software development tools and practices, such as software debugger, version control, issue tracking, documentation.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse teams of engineers, operators, and technicians.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in engineering, science or physics
  • Experience with PCIe bus and DMA interfaces
  • Experience with EPICS control system
  • Experience with real-time operating systems and software practices
  • Work experience in experimental physics facility
