Overview:

We are seeking a Control Systems Software Engineer who will support the Controls Integration Group in the Research Accelerator Division (RAD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) who will focus on SNS control system infrastructure and tools.

 

The group is responsible for maintaining and improving fully integrated control system for SNS accelerator to deliver safe, high reliability beam to the target. Typical systems are based on PLC, VME or MicroTCA hardware integrated using the Experimental Physics and Industrial Control Systems (EPICS).

 

This position reports to Controls Integration group leader. The group is currently focusing on modernizing the control system environment and systems. Ongoing upgrade projects are replacing VME solutions with custom MicroTCA applications, upgrading applications towards EPICS7 and PVAccess protocol, and improving control room operators experience with latest software tools. The position will support the ongoing modernization efforts by integrating new devices into EPICS control system, while also maintaining and improving existing systems. You will work closely with other group members, as well as other technical groups supporting the SNS.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Integrate new devices into EPICS control system by developing EPICS drivers, IOCs, database and operator screens
  • Maintain and improve software integration for existing systems utilizing latest capabilities developed by or in collaboration with EPICS community
  • Write and maintain technical documentation and software manuals
  • Continuous improvements of operator user interfaces by following the established UX (user experience) practices
  • Work closely with other software and hardware engineers and technicians; and collaborate with other technical groups on the same projects
  • Engagement in open-source software collaboration
  • Perform work in accordance with SNS work control procedures and safety guidelines
  • This position operates during typical daytime office hours, but some off-hours and weekend support is required to support the 24/7 operational needs of the SNS
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Science, Physics, or a related field and 8 years of applicable experience
  • Experience with at least one applicable programming language, such as C/C++, Python, Java
  • Demonstrated software development and deployment in Linux operating system
  • Experience with one or more hardware-software communication interfaces: UART, I2C, Modbus, PCIe
  • Proficiency with collaborative software development tools and practices, such as version control, issue tracking, documentation

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Masters Degree in Engineering, Science or Physics and 8 years of applicable experience
  • Demonstrated presentation skills
  • Experience with designing efficient user interfaces
  • Experience with embedded systems environment
  • Experience developing applications and drivers in the EPICS framework highly preferred
  • Work experience in experimental physics facility
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
