Purpose:

The Multifunctional Equipment Integration Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a technical staff position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE Building Technology Office and other customers by developing state-of-the-art building equipment and appliances for energy efficiency, equipment-to-grid integration, and improved life cycle climate performance.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for conducting, coordinating, and reporting complex research assignments related to energy conversion systems including: (1) Data acquisition system development, (2) instrumentation, (3) process control, (4) programming. This will involve the design, fabrication, measurement, analysis, and modeling of various HVAC&R systems and components and appliances such as clothes dryers, dashwashers etc.

 

The work will involve developing experimental setups, problem-solving, conducting experimental campaigns, and system modeling, analyzing results, and preparing technical documents and research publications. The work will also involve interacting and collaborate with research and development staff in BTSD.

Basic Qualifications:

  • You must have earned a B.S in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field such as Computer Science and Engineering
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research and development and/or field experience with instrumentation and process control for energy systems is preferred.
  • You should possess the necessary background and experience in (a) innovating thinking and problem solving, (b) basic knowledge with LabVIEW programing (with cDAQ a plus), and (c) basic knowledge of various mechanical systems and instrumentation, and (d) the desire to learn and develop expertise in data acquisition, process control and prototype development through more senior staff and through official training from suppliers.
  • Expertise with LabVIEW is a plus.
  • Experience with prototype development is also a plus.
  • Experience in developing new ideas and proposal writing is a plus.
  • Finally, the successful candidate should have a strong background in project management.
  • Expertise in one or multiple of the following areas is of particular interest: (a) data acquisition system, (b) process control (c) prototype development and validation.
