Director, Materials Science and Technology Division

Date: Sep 1, 2022

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 7560

Overview:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks an outstanding research leader for the position of Director of the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD).  The MSTD includes a staff of 200 people and couples basic and applied research to discover, design, and develop new materials and processes to enable new and improved energy technologies and processes relevant to energy efficiency, renewable energy, transportation, resource sustainability, fossil energy, carbon management, fusion energy, nuclear power, and other energy technologies.

Basic and applied research programs include the following thrust areas:

  • Design and synthesis of alloys, correlated electron materials, quantum heterostructures, structural ceramics and composites, specialized crystals, functional thin films, and nanostructures
  • Theory, modeling, simulation, and characterization across multiple length and time scales
  • State-of-the-art characterization via electron microscopy, neutron scattering, and comprehensive physical and mechanical property measurements
  • Materials behaviors under extreme environments (temperature, corrosive media, radiation)
  • Precision synthesis and processing techniques including novel thermo-mechanical processing and surface engineering
  • Materials for advanced manufacturing and materials processing (e.g., additive manufacturing, transient field processing, and others)

The MST Division is well-aligned with key areas of excellence at ORNL, including chemical sciences and interfacial processes, neutron science, nuclear science and engineering, energy technologies, and computation.  MSTD has strong ties with the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, one of five Department of Energy national nanoscience user facilities; the Spallation Neutron Source; the High Flux Isotope Reactor; the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility; and the National Center for Computational Sciences.  In addition, MSTD researchers are heavily involved in the Quantum Science Center, one of five quantum partnerships funded by the Department of Energy.  With basic and applied research programs in materials sciences, opportunities for collaborative research across the Department of Energy national laboratory environment are abundant.  The MST Division also has extensive collaborations with universities, industry, and Department of Defense laboratories.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Direct a leading materials research organization with broad capabilities in materials synthesis and processing; atomic- to macro-scale structural/physical characterization; and computational-based theory, modeling, and simulation that spans basic and applied research
  • Drive a vision for materials science and technology across MSTD and ORNL, identifying research opportunities in coordination with program offices and organizations inside and outside ORNL
  • Ensure a stimulating environment for creativity and R&D excellence that will attract and retain outstanding staff
  • Identify opportunities to enhance capabilities with respect to hiring staff, procuring equipment, and space
  • Foster clear communications within MSTD and across ORNL, highlighting technical achievements and staff recognition, identifying opportunities, and addressing issues of importance for the organization
  • Mentor staff for professional success
  • Promote a culture of safety and security in the workplace
  • Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Physical Sciences, Materials Science, Engineering, or closely related field
  • A minimum of fifteen years of professional research experience beyond the doctorate in a university, industry, or national laboratory
  • At least five years of experience leading multi-disciplinary research groups or organizations
  • A distinguished record of research achievement, as evidenced by scholarly publications, patents, and/or funded research grants

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A demonstrated record supporting the professional development of research staff and team research
  • Extensive experience identifying key expertise and assembling scientifically balanced research and development teams, with a focus on multi-disciplinary research groups or organizations
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to foster and maintain high standards in Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) and Quality Assurance for Division’s activities

Special Requirements:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Please provide a list of publications and patents when applying for this position.
