Purpose

 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a scientific leader with a national and international reputation and a proven record of scientific accomplishments to serve as the Director of the Manufacturing Science Division (MSD). The Manufacturing Science Division focuses on the development and implementation of next-generation advanced manufacturing technologies through research and scale-up of new processes and technical capabilities enabling new materials, systems and products for clean energy and decarbonization. The division has four primary focus areas: composite science and technology, energy and industrial decarbonization, precision manufacturing and machining and secure and digital manufacturing. The division is also home to two world-class manufacturing facilities, the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) and the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility (CFTF), enabling “Placed-based Innovation”.

 

Major Duties / Responsibilities

 

The Manufacturing Science Division Director (DD) is responsible for providing technical and scientific leadership for the Division’s research staff and for maintaining the quality of research in the division.  The director accomplishes this by working with the Section Heads and Group Leaders within the Division and other staff across ORNL, under the leadership of the Associate Laboratory Director for Energy Science and Technology Directorate.  The director is expected to shape future strategic research directions, build technical capabilities and bench-depth, and establish a technical succession pipeline in order to deliver on existing programs while developing emerging programmatic areas with leaders across ORNL.  The director is expected to develop and maintain a healthy collaborative relationship with other federal agencies, industry, and universities.  The director has management oversight of approximately 150 scientists and engineers and a research budget of greater than $85M.

 

Qualifications

 

Ph.D. in an engineering or scientific discipline relevant to mechanical, chemical and/or electrical systems research and a recognized record of research accomplishments in that field, plus 15 years of relevant experience is required.

 

Recognized national and international reputation and record of accomplishment in a discipline relevant to the Division’s research and demonstrated experience with technical/scientific management and development is required. 

 

Ability to interact effectively with funding agencies, such as DOE, and demonstrated ability to initiate substantial new research efforts and collaborations is required. 

 

Demonstrated technical and strategic leadership ability applicable to running a large, diverse, team-oriented organization with a multidisciplinary group of engineers and scientists is required.

 

Demonstrated experience in effective management and administrative oversight, creativity in decision making and problem solving, and a commitment to mentoring and career development 

 

Requirements

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
