Overview:

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Job duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Evaluate and improve electrical systems to enhance performance, reliability, and address obsolescence issues.
- Specify, develop, and procure subsystems and components.
- Provide technical support, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and installation activities.
- Develop and maintain documentation, including designs, installation, testing, training, maintenance, procurement procedures, and specifications.
- Plan, manage, and execute maintenance and upgrade activities using work control tools.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the laboratory and external stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
- Present work at conferences, workshops, and sponsor reviews.
- Provide technical field support and troubleshooting assistance.
- Participate in occasional after-hours and weekend support as necessary.

Basic Requirements:
- BS degree in electrical engineering or a related field and a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience, or an MS and at least 4 years of relevant experience or a PhD.
- Demonstrated expertise and understanding of electrical engineering principles, including analog and digital circuit theory.
- Experience with designing, installing, and troubleshooting complex electrical or electromechanical systems.
Preferred Requirements:
- Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in electrical engineering or related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
- Experience with one or more of the following:
Electrical engineering software:
- AutoCAD (for electrical drawings/design).
- SolidWorks (3D modeling and design).
- SKM PowerTools (Arc Flash analyses, coordination studies).
- ETAP (Electrical system analyses).
- Proficiency with LabVIEW (system architecture, programming, debugging).
Familiarity with programming:
- PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), particularly Allen-Bradley.
- FPGAs.
- Experience with embedded systems development (bare-metal, RTOS, Linux).
- Familiarity with programming languages such as C/C++, Python, or MATLAB.
Electrical System Expertise:
Experience designing, commissioning, and troubleshooting:
- High-power electronics (including semiconductor devices and pulsed power systems >50kV).
- Magnet power supplies.
- AC/DC power distribution systems.
Knowledge of electrical codes and standards:
- National Electric Code (NFPA-70).
- NFPA 70E (Electrical safety).
- NFPA 70B (Maintenance standards).
Safety & Regulatory Knowledge:
Experience implementing and ensuring compliance with:
- Electrical safety standards (NFPA, OSHA, NEC).
- DOE orders and laboratory-specific safety regulations.
Project Management & Leadership:
- Experience managing technical projects, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and execution.
- Demonstrated capability in leading cross-functional teams and mentoring junior staff.
Proven ability to create comprehensive technical documentation, including:
- Engineering drawings and specifications.
- Reports, procedures, journal and conference papers.
- Technical presentations to internal stakeholders and at external conferences and workshops.
Laboratory & Research Facility Experience:
- Familiarity with or direct experience working in DOE national laboratory settings.
- Operational or maintenance experience at large-scale scientific facilities (e.g., accelerator, neutron scattering, nuclear research).
- Familiarity with maintenance activities in a nuclear operating environment and regulatory programs, including DOE Orders pertaining to conduct of operation and maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to operate in fast-paced research environments, prioritize tasks effectively, and adapt to changing project requirements.
Additional Technical Skills, Experience with:
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), including Allen-Bradley systems.
- LabVIEW system architecture, programming, and debugging.
- Industrial data acquisition and control systems (e.g., SCADA, NI DAQmx, OPC servers).
- Exposure to various data communication protocols (TCP/IP, Modbus, Ethernet IP, RS-232, RS-485).
- Familiarity with embedded systems and controls for robotics, automation, and data acquisition.
Special Requirement:
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
