Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking an Electrical Process Equipment Engineer for our world class radioisotope production program, with expertise in the area of design, testing, and commissioning of equipment and infrastructure for nuclear materials handling. Supporting the largest radioisotope production and research portfolio within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production, as well as extensive isotope production programs for the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration, this position will grant you the opportunity to work with rare nuclear materials, and the unique facilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC), as you support the strategic growth of our radioisotope handling infrastructure.

 

You will be working with scientists, engineers, and technicians to design equipment to support a large range of technical areas. Including, chemical processing, radiation detection, specialty scientific equipment, and mechanical fabrication with nuclear materials. You will support new and existing equipment and programs. The work is performed under exacting quality specifications and with the adherence to conduct of operations in nuclear facilities, requiring good team dynamics and efficiency to meet tight schedules. We are seeking a team member who can be a team player with excellent attention to detail.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Performs and analyzes routine to moderately complex engineering functions, applying mathematical, physical science, and engineering technologies.
  • Perform hands-on support in assembling, testing, integrating, and troubleshooting process/production equipment for new and enduring remote operations with radioactive materials within hot cells, and gloveboxes at REDC and other facilities.
  • Lead the development of and review of custom electromechanical designs for new and replacement equipment including requirements determination, equipment selection, calculations, installation instructions / specifications, post-modification testing and commissioning procedures, etc. to satisfy the applicable design requirements.
  • Develops test procedures and performs routine to moderately complex engineering evaluation tests, product and process capability studies, quality audits, product or project data reviews, and other engineering evaluation work to assure product manufacturability.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution/program.
  • Five or more years of experience in Engineering or related technical activities, such as product development, research, or manufacturing.
  • Experience with operation of complex electro-mechanical systems within process environments.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers’ operations, ladder logic programming, process control narratives, and human machine interface screen design.
  • Experience with sensors, instrumentation, and data acquisition equipment.
  • Ability to apply strong interpersonal and communications skills working with a diverse team ranging from skilled laborers to PhD engineers/scientist.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L clearance.

 

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in transitioning R&D prototype electronics from a laboratory setting to an operational facility and/or to transferring technology from prototype design to commercial companies.
  • Experience with automation programming systems (e.g., Allen Bradley, Mitsubishi, PLC ladder logic)
  • Familiarity with mechanical and electrical drawings and 3D models in CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Solid works, CREO).
  • Experience with programming and/or data automation software (e.g., C++, FORTRAN, MATLAB, LabView, Python).
  • Hands-on experience testing and de-bugging circuitry.
  • Experience navigating and using National Electric Code to ensure electrical compliance.

This position resides in the Radioisotope Infrastructure Development (RID) Group in the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD) at ORNL. RID enables the production of a variety of important medical, scientific, and industrial radioisotopes. These include several alpha/beta emitting radioisotopes either deployed or under clinical trial for treatment of cancer (e.g., Ac-225, Ac-227, Ra-224/Pb-212, and W-188); heavy actinides Bk-249, Es-254, and Fm-257 for fundamental chemistry research and new element discovery; Cf-252 for neutron emitting applications; Pu-238 for space exploration; and Ni-63 and Pm-147 for industrial applications. Work in the RSTD often takes place within remote handling equipment such as gloveboxes and hot cells.
