Overview: 

We are seeking an R&D Associate  who will focus on the application of monochromated electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) in aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) toward understanding the behavior of energy and quantum materials. This position resides in the STEM Group, Nanomaterials Characterization Section in the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

As part of our research team, you will be responsible for advancing novel electron microscopy techniques, especially ultrahigh-energy resolution EELS in a STEM. You will conduct STEM and EELS experiments to image a broad range of materials at atomic resolution and analyze and interpret results from STEM-based techniques such as 4D-STEM and monochromated EELS. As a staff scientist in CNMS, you are expected to carry out high-impact nanoscience projects with the external scientific community through an open, peer-reviewed user program and conduct in-house research to discover, understand, and exploit functional nanomaterials.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct research using aberration-corrected STEM and EELS
  • Advance monochromated EELS and related data analysis methods
  • STEM imaging and spectroscopy at low temperatures
  • Collaborate with scientists within and external to ORNL as part of the CNMS User Program
  • Be responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Work safely and in compliance with all environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ethical values and behavior

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in materials science, condensed matter physics, or related field and demonstrated experience in microscopy
  • Hands-on experience with STEM and monochromated EELS

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent publication record in STEM and EELS
  • Demonstration of advanced Python/C++ programming skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
