Purpose

 

The Biodiversity and Sustainable Systems Section (BSS) within the Environmental Sciences Division(ESD), http://www.esd.ornl.gov at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), http://www.ornl.gov is seeking a technical professional to conduct modeling and analysis of energy technologies and programs. You will join the Environmental Risk and Energy Analysis Group in developing analyses that advance innovative development of energy technologies in the U.S. into cost-competitive, reliable, and sustainable resources. You will work with an interdisciplinary team of engineers, economists, and environmental scientists to generate foundational data, conduct scientific analyses, and develop models and advanced computational tools that inform policymakers and stakeholders in the energy sector.

ESD is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with more than 60 years of achievement in local, regional, national, and international environmental research. Our vision is to expand scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that will strengthen the nation’s leadership in creating solutions to help sustain the Earth’s natural resources. Our scientists conduct research, develop technology, and perform analyses to understand and assess responses of environmental systems at the environment-human interface and the consequences of alternative energy and environmental strategies.

 

The BSS Section explores how genes, organisms, populations, and communities influence, and are influenced by, the management, health, and sustainability of ecological systems. Researchers develop and implement tools and methods to quantify and mitigate threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services. They advance the state of water resources science and engineering through multidisciplinary research focused on data analytics, model simulation, engineering design, decision support and visualization. Scientists are developing advanced simulations to understand human health, economic, and environmental protection dimensions of existing and emerging sustainable energy alternatives

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities

You will have the opportunity to work closely with ORNL engineers, economists, and scientists to build, refine, and apply models and advanced data analytics to develop strategies for economic and sustainable energy production from hydropower, petroleum, and alternative fuels. Such analysis will include:

  • Develop mathematical models to assess the availability, reliability, costs, economic benefits, and environmental impacts of energy technologies (e.g., hydropower systems and technologies research),
  • Develop analyses to gain insights into the economic and environmental tradeoffs of energy systems and technologies, including hydropower, petroleum, and alternative fuels,
  • Calibrate algorithms using field data from government, academic, and industry partners,
  • Conduct rigorous model verification and validation analysis,
  • Augment capabilities in energy resource assessment and strengthen connectivity between resource assessment and quantification of sustainability indicators,
  • Advance team capabilities in high-performance computing and data visualization.

 

You will also be responsible for:

  • Interacting with staff working on projects in a team environment,
  • Contributing to strategic planning and visioning for energy analysis research for DOE’s Clean and Sustainable Energy Initiatives which include the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO), and Bio-Energy Technology Office (BETO).
  • Communicating and working with sponsors from DOE as well as collaborators from other government agencies, national laboratories, universities, and industry stakeholders,
  • Contributing to meet planed milestones across multiple projects and to the development of proposals for internal and external research funding,
  • Preparing and presenting research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, technical exchanges, and conferences,
  • Producing and documenting research in journals, technical reports, and conference papers and presentations.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • M.S. degree in engineering, applied statistics, economics or related discipline and post-graduate experience in energy modeling research, economic analysis, and/or computer programming,
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with an international scientific and technical audience,
  • Demonstrated ability to publish research findings in peer-reviewed conference proceedings and journals,
  • Ability to develop and use code for modeling and data analysis in multiple languages and environments including Python, R, GAMS, Julia, and C/C++
  • Candidates with backgrounds in mathematical programming models of energy systems/markets and statistical analysis of time series data are of particular interest.
