Overview: 

The Research Accelerator Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Field Supervisor- Electrical.

The Research Accelerator Division’s mission is to safely and reliably operate the SNS accelerator and target, and to execute impactful accelerator R&D focused on SNS improvements and strategic opportunities, all in support of delivering neutrons for impactful scientific discovery.

 

The Field Supervisor - Electrical will report to the Electrical Support Group Leader and contribute to the direction of  Electrical Research Mechanics in maintenance, electrical R&D support and field repairs of systems associated with the accelerator, target and neutron instruments at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The Field Supervisor will work directly with the Group Leader to coordinate, assign, plan and schedule work of craft resources in maintaining and operating the Spallation Neutron Source. Teaming with craft workers, technicians, planners and other support personnel, the Field Supervisor will prepare and plan work in a safe, secure, compliant, and efficient manner. Field Supervisors work closely with technicians, engineers, and scientists to ensure maintenance and service needs of accompanying support organizations and researchers are met promptly and cost effectively.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Establish and maintain a business culture that focuses on meeting the needs of research and support organizations
  • Serve as the interface to ensure customers are fully informed about programmatic and corrective maintenance tasks, schedules, status, delays, etc. in order to minimize customer's operational impacts.
  • Ensure service needs of research and support organizations are met promptly and cost-effectively.
  • Plan and direct electrical activities required to support research at the Spallation Neutron Source.
  • Ensure work tasks are properly analyzed and graded according to ORNL work control procedures.
  • Contribute to preparation of the Integrated Work Plan, outage work plans, and manage tasks within budgets and schedules in a manner that is compliant with environmental, safety, health, and quality requirements.
  • Ensure work is conducted safely, securely and in compliance with Laboratory policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Participate in incident reporting, safety talks, audits, assessments, and ACTS where applicable.
  • Responsible for the supervisory administrative functions including training, timekeeping, discipline, and feedback, etc.
  • Responsible for on-the-job training, reviewing work activities, and evaluating performance and qualifications of craft workers.
  • Hold staff accountable for performance and ensure their actions are compliant with all company policies and processes.
  • Maintain an open and supportive working environment where staff report issues and concerns without fear of retribution.
  • Ensure completeness of records necessary to maintain configuration control, equipment history, continuous operations, and regulatory reporting.


Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma with a minimum of 5 years of electrical experience required.
  • Knowledge of electrical installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair practices and procedures required.
  • Familiarity with labor relations principles to include working within a union contract environment.
  • Appropriate combination of education and experience to coordinate, plan, and schedule the work of others in installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair practices and operation of complex technical electrical and electronic equipment.

 

Candidates should also have knowledge of:

  • Practices of construction, repair, and maintenance of electrical infrastructure
  • Basic electronics, PLC and instrumentation
  • Functions, use, and care of tools, equipment and materials used in electrical work
  • Safety precautions associated with work on electrical systems and equipment
  • Applicable laws and codes relating to electrical work
  • Theories and practices of supervision
  • Basic working knowledge of NFPA70 and NFPA70E
  • Work control purpose and processes
  • Computer experience with standard software such as MS-Excel, MS-Word, and MS-Outlook

Other Job Requirements:
This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a

pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to

being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.

 

This position is subject to adverse weather conditions and is subject to emergency call back for after-hours work.
