Overview and Purpose:

The Computational Earth Sciences Group (CESG) in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division (CSED) is seeking a Computational Scientist or Engineer to perform data discovery and user interface software engineering for the next generation Earth System Grid Federation 2 (ESGF2). ESGF2 is a global peer-to-peer network of data servers that collect and distribute Earth system model simulation output from modeling centers all over the world. The candidate will collaboratively design, develop, implement, and deploy algorithms and software to support ESGF2 for the US Department of Energy (DOE) Earth and Environmental Systems Sciences Division’s Data Management Program. CSED focuses on transdisciplinary computational science and analytics at scale to enable scientific discovery across the physical sciences, engineered systems, and biomedicine and health. It develops community applications, data assets, and technologies and provides assurance to build knowledge and impact in novel, crosscut-science outcomes.

The candidate will be a staff scientist within the CESG of the Advanced Computing Methods for Physical Sciences Section in CSED. The CESG is focused on the conduct of world-class research and development in Earth system modeling; model-data integration, large scale data management, analytics and machine learning; and model benchmarking at DOE’s Leadership Computing Facilities (LCFs) and its National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). The CESG has specific strengths in numerical methods, simulation, and analysis focused on terrestrial hydrology and biogeochemistry, atmospheric and ocean dynamics, aerosols, regional climate, ice sheets and sea level rise, and the global carbon cycle.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a diverse and multidisciplinary team of software architects and engineers, computational scientists, and Earth system modelers across DOE labs in developing and deploying a deep stack of software to support ESGF2
  • Design, develop, and implement software for user interfaces for data discovery and transfer and data workflows assuring provenance and integrity
  • Develop technical papers and documentation and support user needs with documentation, tutorials, and hackathons

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in computer science, computational science, or related technical subjects or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience developing data management tools or user interface software

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing and developing web-based user interfaces with JavaScript and related tools
  • Experience with Python and Jupyter/JupyterHub
  • Familiarity with collaborative development methodologies and development automation tools
  • Knowledge of large scale scientific data management, discovery, distribution, and archiving, as well as FAIR data principles and the Open Science practices
  • Knowledge of commonly used data file formats and conventions (e.g., netCDF, HDF, CF), geographic information system formats, geospatial transformations, and OGC standards and resources
  • Strong motivation to support DOE and international researchers through innovative solutions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse and multidisciplinary scientists and engineers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to report regular progress and support user documentation, tutorials, and hackathons
