Overview:  

We are seeking a Geospatial Data Services and Visualization Specialist to support geospatial data and visualization services for NASA-funded ORNL Distributed Active Archive Center (ORNL DAAC). This position resides in the Remote Sensing and Environmental Informatics Group in the Earth System Informatics and Data Discovery Section, Environmental Sciences Division, Biological and Environmental Systems Science Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee publication of geospatial data services (features, image) and their lifecycle management, ensuring data and metadata compliance.
  • Develop and maintain backend scripts and workflow automation tools for various platforms, including GIS portals, AWS-hosted environments, and associated enterprise systems.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams to meet sponsor’s requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in geography, geographic information science (GIS), computer science, applied sciences such as ecology or a related field with a minimum of two years of experience (B.S.) or one year of relevant experience (M.S.)
  • Familiarity with GIS concepts, spatial data, and geospatial workflows, including geospatial data transformation and visualization, spatial data standards, projections, and metadata best practices
  • Familiarity with traditional and cloud-optimized geospatial data formats for earth observation datasets such as cloud-optimized geotiffs (COG), netCDF, HDF, and ENVI.
  • Experience working with geospatial data servers, including ESRI ArcGIS Enterprise software and tools, including ArcGIS Pro and Portal for ArcGIS. Familiarity with ArcGIS and Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC)-complaint raster and feature geospatial services.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in GIS libraries like GDAL or rasterio/xarray, arcpy, and shell environments.
  • Experience in the data quality assurance and quality control of geospatial data
  • Experience in supporting web GIS applications using ESRI Story Maps and ArcGIS Dashboard.
  • Experience authoring and reviewing YAML/JSON files for configuration and data pipelines
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs

 

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
