Overview:
The National Center for Computational Sciences Division (NCCS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a highly motivated Group Leader for the Technology Integration Group (TechInt). The Group Leader for TechInt is responsible for managing planning and executing a cutting-edge research and development (R&D) portfolio in delivering innovative new technologies in technical computing and data sciences for NCCS projects including the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) and other projects at ORNL. The TechInt group focuses on identifying gaps in large-scale scientific high-performance computing, networking, and storage and driving scientific end-to-end computing technologies and testbeds. TechInt works with the R&D community to identify, harden, and deploy solutions. The position reports to the Section Head of the Advanced Technologies Section (ATS) in NCCS. ATS is an applied research and development organization dedicated to improving facility operations. The section offers scientific, technical, operational, and strategic leadership by researching, developing, and deploying forward-looking solutions to support the largest scientific High Performance Computing systems in the world such as Frontier, the world’s first Exascale Supercomputer.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Provide technical and administrative leadership to a group of approximately 20 research and technical professionals providing solutions to fill the gaps in scientific and technical computing and data management at OLCF and ORNL including large-scale scientific high-performance computing, networking, and storage, and scientific end-to-end computing technologies.

Maintain technical currency and awareness of scientific and technological advances relating to the advancement of large-scale scientific high-performance computing, networking, and storage. Drive scientific end-to-end computing technologies (including emerging hardware and Edge-to-Exascale pipelines) in solving problems related to the leadership computing mission of the OLCF and DOE.

Provide scientific and technical leadership on how to integrate technology innovations into the OLCF and ORNL infrastructure through next-generation testbeds and advanced hardware-software technologies.

Be responsible for the Group performing requirements gathering and prototyping of systems programming in the NCCS.

Interact as needed with appropriate program offices and federal agencies to develop and maintain program funding for basic and applied research. Develop new research directions that can drive continued funding and programmatic support.

Represent group-level work to review committees as appropriate.

Recommend plans to higher-level management for resources needed to ensure customer satisfaction and maintain a forward-looking computing and data environment.

Provide scientific and technical feedback to OLCF and ORNL project leadership teams in large-scale scientific high-performance computing, networking, and storage, and scientific end-to-end computing technologies.

Manage a multi-million-dollar budget.

Manage subcontracts with multiple vendors.

Conduct and publish high-quality computational and data-focused scientific R&D.
Minimum Qualifications Required:
-
PhD in computer science/engineering or a related field.

10+ years of directly related research and development experience with a substantial record in large-scale HPC technologies.

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain research and development programs.
Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated success in personnel management skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Proven capability to work effectively in a team environment.

Proven record for innovative thinking and execution.

Knowledge of government laboratory business practices, specifically within the Department of Energy or related federal departments.

Experience in leading or driving major acquisition program components.

Ability to present ideas or work effectively to stake holders.
