Overview: 

We are seeking a Group Leader for Electrical Engineering in the Site Services Section of the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD) at Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL). The Neutron Technologies Division’s mission is to develop and deploy critical technologies for instruments and target systems, to support operations in those areas and to execute projects in support of neutron sciences. The mission of the Site Services Section is to provide management of facilities, projects, engineering, and construction for conventional facilities across ORNL’s Chestnut Ridge campus.

 

As an Electrical Engineering Group Leader, you are responsible for managing personnel to provide electrical design, construction oversight and maintenance of the facility infrastructure and associated science groups, while managing the operation and maintenance of the Power Distribution System across the Chestnut Ridge campus.

 

The Electrical Engineering Group provides operation and maintenance of power distribution and utilization (13.8kV to 120V), electrical design services for various customers in the Neutron Sciences Directorate which include conventional facilities and experimental equipment, construction oversight for related projects, and facility maintenance support for all buildings on Chestnut Ridge.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

Technical:

  • Subject matter expert for electrical engineering, including fundamental electrical principles and application of codes and standards.
  • Coordinate electrical utility requirements for all facilities on Chestnut Ridge.
  • Provide oversight for engineering documentation (drawings, specifications, calculations, etc.).
  • Support LO/TO for electrical energized systems in associated facilities.
  • Electrical inspections for construction and witness testing to assure compliance with designs and standards.
  • Plan for improvements in electrical equipment to minimize unplanned outages. Identify vulnerabilities and execute corrective action plans to reduce likelihood of failures.
  • Maintain electrical system arc flash calculations and labeling.
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee maintenance of electrical equipment across the Chestnut Ridge site.

 

Leadership & Service:

  • Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing technical projects to position the group for future success.
  • Serve as immediate supervisor for staff members in group.
  • Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group’s strategy and members’ long-term career goals. Provide feedback to address performance issues in a timely manner.
  • Provide relevant input to assist the Section Head with staff development while providing direct and impactful guidance to staff on regular basis.
  • Attract a quality, diverse pool of top candidates and hire staff members who are committed to world-class technology and aspire to be the best in their field.
  • Lead by example by exercising the principles in ORNL’s “Research Code of Conduct” as a guide for proposing, performing, and communicating research.
  • Build strong teams across ORNL (Electrical Utilities, Procurement, Facilities and Operations, etc.).
  • Hold regular technical group meetings and be visible in all work areas.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience. A master’s degree with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Knowledge of the technical concepts of electrical engineering principles, codes, and standards.
  • Proficiency in operations and maintenance of Power Distribution Systems Equipment.
  • Experience with design and construction projects.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing technical teams.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Experience using SKM Power Tools for Arc Flash calculations.
  • Familiarity with working at a DOE national laboratory.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory. 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

About Neutron Sciences Directorate:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source.  Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists.  HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation.  To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to http://neutrons.ornl.gov.
