The Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking highly-motivated individuals to join and contribute to ORNL’s CADES COVE environment which is comprised of multiple tenants performing research and analytics with data using high performance parallel compute, and an array of specialized computational appliances providing rare capabilities in data, such as graph analytics and deep learning vital to a variety of scientific domains. These computational services are backed by high-speed interconnects, parallel filesystems, and a distributed object store. 

As a HPC Systems Administrator, you will work with the CADES Operational team, both maintaining existing services and contributing to the design and rollout of new services for the various research communities.  Due to the nature of the data, it will be required to get a Q/SCI level clearance. 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Manage a CPU/GPU cluster, including hardware and software stack 
  • Manage a Lustre parallel filesystem  
  • Implement/update HPC job scheduling and parallel computing software 
  • Implement software/configuration necessary to ensure Linux code can interact with Microsoft SQL database 
  • Work with cluster users to determine needs and develop solutions to meet those needs. 
  • Ensure adherence to security and privacy practices within the system configuration 
  • Follow strict configuration management policies  
  • Work with the team to define and implement methodologies and standards within the organization 
  • Automate systems administration tasks utilizing open source configuration management tools 
  • Tune operating systems and applications to increase performance and reliability of services 
  • Diagnose system operational problems quickly and effectively 
  • Document system administration procedures for routine and complex tasks  
  • Participate in scheduled support and off-hours maintenance windows 
  • Coordinate with vendors to resolve hardware and software problems 

 

Basic Qualifications 

  • 5 to 8+ years Professional Linux experience 
  • 2+ years cluster management experience  
  • 2+ years storage experience 
  • Experience with parallel and multiprocessing programming interfaces including OpenACC, MPI, and/or OpenMP
  • Experience with common scientific software and libraries such as LAMMPS, FFTW, NAMD, R, and MATLAB 
  • Experience with HPC Schedulers and Resource Managers such as Slurm, Torque, Moab, and/or LSF 
  • Strong scripting skills in shell and/or python  
  • Demonstrated use of a configuration management tools (Puppet, Ansible, or similar technologies) 
  • Ability to use, and build ways to use, automation frameworks 
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy.   As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Expertise with parallel file systems and cluster operations 
  • Experience in production environment using configuration management systems (Ansible, Puppet, CFEngine)  
  • 10+ years Linux experience 
  • 5+ years HPC experience 
  • Experience in a PHI (Protected Health Information) environment 
  • Ability to work with individuals at all levels and diplomatically manage customer expectations 
  • Willingness to accept personal responsibility for client satisfaction  
  • Ability to self-manage assigned tasks and projects 
  • Exceptional attention to detail 
  • Experience with GPU systems 
  • Familiarity with version control systems (Git, SVN) 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a HSPD12/PIV badge.  The position will also require you to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance.
