Overview:  

We are seeking Associate Hazardous Materials Management Technician(s) who will focus on 1) Hazardous Materials Management System Support (e.g., material purchasing / receiving support, inventory record creation / data management, barcode / RFID label processing, inventory maintenance, technology support, data quality, and customer support) or 2) Hazardous Materials Management Quality Assurance Support (e.g., on-site field assessment of hazardous material control area inventories, support time-sensitive material reviews, discrepancy follow-up, and inventory record maintenance). Selected candidate(s) will be assigned a focus area based on experience and Hazardous Materials Management Program needs. Additionally, selected candidate(s) will be crossed-trained across all Hazardous Materials Management Program functions to provide qualified backup support.

 

This position resides in the Electrical and Chemical Operations Group in the Safety and Operations Services Division in the Environment, Safety, Health and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Hazardous Materials Management System Support:  
    • Support hazardous material receiving by verifying deliveries and creating inventory records and labels.
    • Maintain hazardous material inventory records and process updates, transfers, and consumption.
    • Perform physical inventories and reconciliations using barcode and RFID equipment.
    • Create and verify barcode and RFID labels.
    • Operate and troubleshoot inventory equipment, escalating complex issues as needed.
    • Coordinate with staff to resolve routine inventory, labeling, ownership, and location issues.
    • Maintain accurate records and provide routine HMMIS customer support.
    • Provide backup support for quality assurance functions.
  • Hazardous Materials Management Quality Assurance Support:
    • Conduct scheduled physical inventories in assigned hazardous material areas using HMMIS, barcode, and RFID equipment.
    • Verify inventory details against HMMIS records, including container, location, custodian, quantity, and status.
    • Investigate discrepancies, document findings, and coordinate corrective actions.
    • Process approved inventory updates, transfers, consumption records, and label replacements.
    • Review time-sensitive materials, identify items nearing expiration, and coordinate follow-up.
    • Perform quality checks on inventory data, labels, transactions, and documentation.
    • Maintain inventory schedules, reconciliation reports, and required records.
    • Coordinate access, schedules, and follow-up with custodians and facility representatives.
    • Use and maintain barcode, RFID, and label printing equipment; report technical issues as needed.
    • Provide backup support for receiving, purchasing reviews, SDS processing, data maintenance, labeling, and HMMIS customer support.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An AS degree and a minimum of two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered (high school diploma / GED and four years of relevant experience).
  • Experience following written procedures and accurately collecting, entering, reviewing, or maintaining technical data.
  • Ability to use or learn database applications, barcode and RFID equipment, label printers, chemical inventory processes, and quality assurance requirements.
  • Ability to recognize discrepancies, perform basic troubleshooting, document work clearly, and request assistance when an issue is outside established methods or assigned qualifications.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to coordinate work with customers and a multidisciplinary team. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with HMMIS or similar chemical inventory, asset management, logistics, or technical information systems.
  • Experience with chemical inventories, hazardous material receiving, physical reconciliation, field verification, data review, and quality assurance in time-sensitive or regulated settings.
  • Experience using barcode scanners, RFID equipment, label printers, and maintaining, troubleshooting, testing, or implementing related technology.
  • Knowledge of SDS record management, OSHA Hazard Communication, Globally Harmonized System labeling, hazardous material storage, and regulated materials handling.
  • Experience with laboratory operations, environmental health and safety, SAP or purchasing workflows, and related operational processes.
  • Experience working in or supporting U.S. Department of Energy, military, research, industrial, or other regulated environments.
  • Experience supervising or coordinating procedural or operational work in a regulated environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Certain activities may require the use respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Work tasks may involve physical demands, including, but not limited to: standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling heavy items, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and reaching (high & low level).
  • Work may be in varied environmental conditions, including, but not limited to: outdoors (heat/cold), confined spaces, radiological areas, elevated surfaces, hazardous material storage or contaminated areas.
