Overview:  

We are seeking a mid-career Instrument Scientist for the Ultra-Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Instrument (USANS).

The position resides in the SANS and Spin Echo Group, part of the Large Scale Structures Section of the Neutron Scattering Division at ORNL. In this position you will be a member of the team supporting users of the Time-of-Flight USANS instrument at the SNS. You will participate in local contact duties for users of the USANS instrument. Local contact responsibilities include helping users develop USANS experiments and beam time proposals, training users to perform data acquisition and analysis, setting up experiments and ensuring safe operation. You will engage in a variety of developments related to the operation of the instrument, such as upgrades, sample environments and software. You will also have the opportunity to engage in a research program, whether it be self-directed, through collaborations, or both!

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Lead a ground breaking research program, fostering national and international collaborations.
  • Publish research results in top-tier scientific journals and present your work at scientific meetings.
  • Provide sophisticated support to instrument users as a local contact by engaging in experiment planning, instrument setup, user training, data acquisition and data analysis.
  • Drive technological advancements in instrumentation, sample environments, and software to elevate the performance of SANS instruments at ORNL.
  • Engage in strategic outreach efforts to expand and diversify the user community.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science or related field with at least 4 years of postgraduate related experience.
  • Experience with ultra-small-angle neutron and/or X-ray scattering and related data analysis.
  • A strong record of research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ultra-small-angle neutron and/or X-ray scattering and related analysis.
  • Experience with software development for data analysis and modeling.
  • Experience supporting a beamline or beamlines in a neutron or X-ray user facility.
  • Proven ability to work with technical and scientific support groups, graduate students, postdoctoral research associates and other research scientists working in academia and industry.
