A self-heated burning plasma is a crucial step in fusion energy development. US ITER is a DOE Office of Science project hosted by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee. US ITER is seeking an engineer to support the design, development and procurement of US ITER Vacuum Instrumentation & Control subsystems. This scope would include a broad spectrum of hardware and software ranging from state-of-the-art custom designed components to commercially available equipment. In this role you will have the opportunity to develop work deliverables in a design team environment. You will also interface with vendors, engineering personnel within the US ITER project and personnel at the ITER headquarters in France. You may serve the role of Technical Project Officer (TPO).


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with Team Leads, engineers, QA, and procurement within the US ITER Technical Systems Division to develop technical specifications, statements of work and drawing packages detailing the requirements for high power RF, microwave, cooling water, magnets, and/or vacuum systems
  • As Technical Project Officer (TPO) you will be responsible for working with procurement to lead evaluation of proposals for vendor selection and contract award
  • Oversee the management of fabrication contracts with industry for ITER components
  • Participate in technical development of design documents and drawings including Process Flow Diagrams, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams, Technical Specifications, analysis and calculations
  • Manage configuration control activities during design and fabrication phases
  • Evaluate fabrication deviation requests and non-conformances from industrial suppliers
  • Specify US ITER intervention points (hold points, witness points, customer inspections) during

fabrication and participate/oversee these activities

  • Foreign and domestic travel to fabricators, support subcontractors, and sponsor (IO) facilities is required


Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in Engineering
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes including associated inspection/certification techniques


Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Engineering
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant technical and project management experience demonstrating comprehensive understanding of design and manufacturing of high power RF, microwave, cooling water, magnets, and/or vacuum system components for large-scale science or nuclear facilities
  • Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate problems, investigate and propose solutions, perform calculations, apply industry codes and standards, and document design and fabrication activities
  • Demonstrated ability to influence your environment to successfully achieve project goals, utilize project management tools to support execution of project scope, interface effectively with management, and interface effectively with vendors and fabricators
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Familiarity with DOE procurement guidelines
  • Familiarity with European and French codes, standards, and regulatory requirements, especially those for pressure equipment, rotating, and electrical equipment
  • Familiarity with U.S. codes and standards for design and construction
  • Experience in the commercial nuclear industry and/or with fusion research and development. Experience working in an international environment
