Overview: 

We are seeking a Senior Technical Staff Member to be the Systems Engineering and Integration Lead and manage the design and integration of the entire DOE scope of the LEGEND-1000 project. In this role, you will work closely with the international project team to deliver the LEGEND-1000 experiment to achieve its physics goals. This position resides in the LEGEND-1000 Project Office in the Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

The LEGEND-1000 Project plans to construct a ~350T liquid argon cryostat and populate it with 1000 kg of enriched Ge detectors in an effort to observe neutrinoless double beta decay. The Systems Engineering and Integration Lead ensures that the LEGEND-1000 design conforms to physics requirements, engineering criteria, integrated controls, and engineering and laboratory interfaces and meets all US and international safety standards. As part of the project team, you will be responsible for maintaining cost and schedule while providing designs, procurement support, installation support, and testing support for the DOE scope of the LEGEND-1000 Project.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate technical and engineering aspects of the DOE LEGEND project scope.
  • Manage the experiment’s technical interfaces and requirements.
  • Lead designers and support engineers to produce designs, analysis, drawings, specification, and other design related deliverables.
  • Serve as primary interface for assigned technical scope.
  • Coordinate engineering design reviews for the project.
  • Achieve best possible technical/cost/schedule results in prototyping, design and construction of cryogenic systems.
  • Manage the project’s engineering documents including, but not limited to:
    • Interface control documents covering the full LEGEND technical scope across the experiment’s facilities, cryogenics, process flow hardware, electronics, instrumentation, materials, simulations, and analyses.
    • Requirements definition documents
    • Design and Analysis Calculations (DACs)
    • 3-D CAD models
    • Hardware drawings
    • Technical Specifications
    • Statements of Work
    • Installation Plans
    • Test Plans
  • Ensure that the scope of work on major project procurements is technically complete and integrated with cost and schedule requirements.
  • Provide leadership to create a success-oriented project culture.
  • Develop strong working relationships across the project with Control Account Managers, line managers, vendors, sponsors, and project support organizations including ES&H, QA, procurement, business, project controls, and human resources.
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.
  • Represent the LEGEND Project by participating in and presenting project information at reviews.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in science or engineering with at least 8 years of engineering experience; a MS and 7 years of experience, or a PhD and 4 years of experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with low-background physics projects.
  • Prior experience in the design, fabrication, and installation of cryostat hardware.
  • Knowledge of DOE Order 413.3b project management requirements.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and EPDM for CAD design and document control.
  • Use job knowledge and solid judgment to make quality decisions in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with and manage sponsors, vendors, partners, and project team members.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills with demonstrated capability of building trust and building teams.
  • Dependable and be counted on to deliver results with a sense of personal responsibility for expected outcomes.
  • Openness and a degree of flexibility to maximize the science output.
