Overview: 

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Director to co-lead the ORNL-wide Interconnected Science Ecosystem (INTERSECT) Initiative.  INTERSECT is a strategic Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) initiative that is creating a common computational infrastructure (or ecosystem) enabling automated and autonomous workflows, experiments and laboratories across scientific disciplines. INTERSECT research projects establish automated and autonomous workflows and laboratories that are operated using INTERSECT computational tools. Scientists collaborate across all INTERSECT projects in the spirit of co-design to create the ecosystem. This new hire is expected to be a domain expert in materials science, physics, or chemistry or related field and will direct the initiative with a co-Director in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate.

 

This position resides in the Materials Science and Technology Division in the Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL); other divisions could be considered depending upon the applicant.  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Co-Lead the Interconnected Science Ecosystem Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) lab initiative
  • Work across all directorates to build and execute a strategy for the laboratory Initiative
  • Build and implement a strategy to provide long-term funding for the activities developed in the initiative
  • Set strategic objectives and priorities for the INTERSECT initiative.
  • Represent INTERSECT to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with INTERSECT project PIs in achieving research goals.
  • Oversee the INTERSECT operation and budget.
  • Develop and manage proposal calls for projects funded through the initiative.
  • Build and implement a strategy to provide long-term funding for the capabilities and activities developed in the INTERSECT initiative.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, or other related discipline with a minimum of 12 years of experience
  • Demonstrated track record of scientific leadership
  • Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with DOE Office of Basic Energy Science
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across a large research organization 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs
