Overview:  

The Research Mission Digital Delivery Division within the Information Technology Services Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking qualified applicants for a Linux Systems Engineer position in the Research and Development Systems Engineering group. The R&D Systems Engineering group exists to facilitate lab goals through systems engineering, integration, and support for the research community at ORNL. We run mid-range clusters, servers, workstations, and other services where science happens at the lab.

 

The Linux Systems Engineer is responsible for supporting the ORNL DAAC project (https://daac.ornl.gov). This successful candidate will provide system deployment, automation, configuration management, monitoring, system patching and administration for both on-site systems and systems in Amazon Web Services (AWS).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Patch and maintain Red Hat Linux servers.
  • Support and maintain FreeNAS Storage.
  • Administer and support Puppet automation.
  • Build project-specific RPMs as needed.
  • Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
  • Install and configure software, both commercial packages and various open-source packages.
  • Develop scripts to automate project tasks, including system administration tasks.
  • Contribute to the design, deployment, and management of systems and services using Amazon Web Services to support project objectives.
  • Proactively ensure the protection of system confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
  • Ensure systems remain in compliance with relevant cybersecurity policies.
  • Off hours support may be required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related technical field and two years of Linux System Administration experience (RHEL experience preferred). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of NAS Storage Administration experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of system configuration management with automated tools (Puppet experience preferred).
  • A minimum of two (2) years of VMware experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in any of these areas is useful and should be highlighted in the resume and/or cover letter. 

  • Five years of Red Hat Linux System Administration experience.
  • Previous experience working with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Experience building, deploying, and supporting VMware environments.
  • Experience building, deploying, and managing Docker containers.
  • Experience supporting Globus.
  • Experience building RPM packages.
  • Practical experience with using scripting for automation, with bash, Python, and perl preferred.
  • Previous experience working in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peer system administrators.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
