Overview: 

The Information Technology Services Division in the Business Services Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking qualified applicants for a Linux Systems Engineer position in the Research and Development Systems Engineering group. The R&D Systems Engineering group exists to facilitate lab goals through systems engineering, integration, and support for the research community at ORNL. We run mid-range clusters, servers, workstations, and other services where science happens at the lab.

 

The Linux Systems Engineer is responsible for supporting multiple scientific projects at ORNL, including the Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) (https://daac.ornl.gov).   This successful candidate will provide system deployment, automation, configuration management, monitoring, system patching and administration for both on-site systems and systems in Amazon Web Services (AWS). 

 

As part of our team, you will…

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Patch and maintain Red Hat Linux servers.
  • Support and maintain TrueNAS Storage Systems.
  • Administer, support and build out new Puppet automation infrastructure.
  • Work with other Systems Engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
  • Install and configure software, both commercial packages and various open-source packages.
  • Develop scripts to automate project tasks, including system administration tasks.
  • Contribute to the design, deployment, and management of systems and services using Amazon Web Services to support project objectives.
  • Proactively ensure the protection of system confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
  • Ensure systems remain in compliance with relevant cybersecurity policies.
  • Delegate work as needed to other System Engineers.
  • Delivering solutions based on a described problem and a desired outcome.
  • Off hours support may be required.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or related technical field
  • A minimum of five years of Linux System Administration experience, with RHEL experience particularly preferred
  • Experience supporting TrueNAS Storage Systems
  • A minimum of three years of Puppet configuration management experience
  • Experience supporting VMware environments
  • Experience building, deploying, and managing Docker containers
  • Experience working with Git
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in any of these areas is useful and should be highlighted in the resume and/or cover letter 

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or related technical field
  • Experience supporting Globus
  • Experience building out and supporting AWS environments
  • Practical experience with using scripting for automation, with Bash, Python, and Perl preferred
  • Previous experience working in a government, scientific, or other highly technical environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peer system administrators
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
