Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Program Manager for Research, Development, Deployment, and Demonstration (R&DDD) in Clean Energy.  The position will be cross-cutting in nature and focus on the alignment of multidisciplinary science and technology strengths at ORNL to address challenging energy security missions of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).  The successful candidate will report to the Associate Lab Director for the Energy Science and Technology Directorate which plays a pivotal role in America’s energy transformation into a clean, efficient, flexible, and secure energy future.



As DOE’s largest Office of Science laboratory, there are extensive science expertise and capabilities available to apply to DOE clean energy challenges, and ORNL has major programs in the applied science areas of advanced manufacturing, sustainable transportation, building technologies, fossil energy and carbon management, and more.  In addition, ORNL is home to nine world-class user facilities: the Building Technologies Research and Integration Center, the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility, the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences, the Center for Structural Molecular Biology, the High Flux Isotope Reactor, the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility, the National Transportation Research Center, the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, and the Spallation Neutron Source.  The successful candidate will leverage the extensive science and technology resources at ORNL to create solutions for energy security challenges such as decarbonization and electrification of major energy sectors in the U.S.  The position is both technical and managerial.  The successful candidate will need to understand scientific phenomena and technical details to align R&DDD strengthens to solve critical barriers to clean energy commercialization.  Plus, the successful candidate will need to bring diverse scientific and technical staff together with industry partners and DOE personnel to ensure effective utilization of resources for impactful advancement of the technology readiness of clean energy solutions.  Furthermore, the successful candidate will need to manage the program and activities in the national laboratory framework.  The position will be crosscutting in nature as diverse staff and a broad range of technologies are needed to meet clean energy challenges.



  • Develop R&DDD strategies to enable sustainable clean energy solutions
  • Develop collaborative relationships with key stakeholders at DOE as well as associated industry, national laboratory, and university partners
  • Engage ORNL staff, fellow program managers, and line management in DOE programs
  • Secure resources for executing DOE projects and programs in support of DOE missions and goals
  • Work with ORNL staff and line management to deliver impactful science-based outcomes in support of DOE objectives



  • A Ph.D. or equivalent technical experience in science or engineering disciplines
  • A minimum of 12 years’ experience in science and technology research, development, deployment, or demonstration
  • Demonstrated experience building and executing high impact research programs
  • Demonstrated ability to bring diverse people together to advance clean energy technologies
