Overview:  

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a skilled and innovative Mechanical Designer II to join our dynamic team. As a Mechanical Designer at ORNL, you will have the opportunity to work on groundbreaking research and development projects, collaborating with world-class scientists and engineers to advance scientific discoveries and technological advancements.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and fellow designers to develop mechanical designs and solutions for scientific instruments, prototypes, and experimental setups.
  • Use Creo Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create detailed 3D models and drawings for manufacturing, assembly, and fabrication purposes.
  • Perform assigned tasks efficiently and collaborates with senior design staff.
  • Prepares clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches, electronic databases, or written or verbal instructions.
  • Checks with senior design staff to ensure that detail drawings comply with engineering codes and drafting standards.
  • Participate in personal development to continually build/refine skillset.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An associate degree in an engineering related field with a minimum of 2 years of experience in mechanical design and engineering.

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered (a high school diploma with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or a bachelor’s degree in an engineering related field).
  • Experience in 3D CAD software (e.g., Creo, SolidWorks, or similar or proven ability to learn new CAD system on the job in recent work.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Creo CAD software.
  • Experience in working with Windchill PDM/PLM software, or similar.
  • Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards; including ASME Y14.5.
  • Familiarity with design analysis tools (e.g., finite element analysis) and simulation software.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to identify and resolve design challenges.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Awareness of various manufacturing techniques and their associated tolerance capabilities/limitations.
  • Experience in the research or scientific community.
