Overview: 

We are seeking an experienced quality control nuclear radiochemist to develop and administer quality control processes for analytical chemistry protocols and programs involving bulk, nuclear, and environmental matrices with a focus on the safeguards and nuclear applications.  As a team member you will contribute to the establishment of requirements and metrics that will ensure the quality of measurements and adherence to the requirements in ISO 17025 as well as sponsor specific requirements. This position resides in the Chemical and Isotopics Mass Spectrometry (CIMS) Group in the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry (NAC) Section, Chemicals Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our research team, you will be responsible for the development of acceptance criteria based on programmatic needs and review and verification of the calibration and quality controls of the group’s measurement systems. Conduct surveillances and audits, identification of findings and subsequent corrective actions, and lead the efforts for continuous improvement of our analytical methodologies.

 

The (CIMS) group has extensive history in the analysis of actinide materials dating back to the early 1960s. The team is located in the Ultra Trace Forensic Science Center which houses a suite of advanced and modern laboratories. The facility contains over 10000 square feet of cleanroom space for clean separations and sample preparation. In addition, there are higher level laboratories and glove boxes across campus for various applications. The separation laboratories feature unique automated separation systems, and sample handling infrastructure.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Management of compliance and accreditation programs
  • Develop and administer quality control processes for complex analytical methodologies
  • Data review and approval resulting from complex analytical methodologies
  • Lead programmatic quality reviews and surveillances
  • Assess and audit laboratory methodologies and LIMS data system
  • Implementation and maintenance of quality control measures, method documentation, and programmatic requirements
  • Act as technical advisor for mass spectrometry methods
  • Champion for continuous improvement philosophy and culture
  • Write detailed project and sponsor reports on lab results

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master of Science degree in Chemistry or closely related discipline
  • Fifteen years of analytical chemistry experience and work in a diverse regulatory compliance laboratory 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and practical implementation of requirements for testing laboratories for compliance or accreditation for ISO 17025, NQA-1, ISO 9001, EPA, and FDA cGMP
  • Three years of analytical laboratory management experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

HSPD-12 PIV badge:

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge. 

 

Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
