We are seeking a Waste Management Supervisor who will support the Nuclear Facility Management section in the Nonreactor Nuclear Facilities Division (NNFD), Isotope Science and Engineering Directorate (ISED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The role of the Waste Management Supervisor is to provide oversight, direction, and technical expertise in the characterization, packaging, and disposition of solid waste generated at NNFD facilities.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of Waste Operations to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient disposal of solid waste from the ISED nuclear and radiological facilities.
  • Coordinate with multiple personnel groups to efficiently schedule and conduct waste operations.
  • Support line management in establishing and meeting metric goals for newly generated and legacy waste stream packaging and disposition.
  • Conducts pre- and post-job briefings for all personnel to be involved in the work.
  • Ensures that work is completed in accordance with the approved work package and operating procedure.
  • Develop and revise work packages and procedures to ensure safe and compliant waste management practices.
  • Mentor and evaluate performance of Waste Technician team to support career development.
  • Ensure newly generated waste streams are recognized before being generated and waste profiles are revised, as necessary, to support disposal.
  • Incorporate Central Characterization Program (CCP) requirements into TRU waste disposal activities, where required.
  • Ensures personnel performing work tasks are properly trained/qualified.
  • Coordinate with Procurement to purchase and maintain adequate materials and supplies for waste packaging.
  • Establishes and ensures an open and supportive working environment.
  • Provides performance feedback to team members.
  • Notifies line management of potential safety events and lead/participate in investigations of events.

Basic Qualifications:

  • An AS degree and 8 years of experience in Waste Management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated leadership of crafts or techs.
  • Minimum of 4 years of nuclear experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with ORNL facilities and ORNL or commercially available radioactive material transportation shipping containers is desired as well as requisite Department of Transportation regulation knowledge.
  • Supervisory or leadership role experience.
  • This position also requires experience with Microsoft Office software, particularly Word and Excel applications.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • This position requires an “L” clearance; however, all qualified applicants will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. 
  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
