Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 7997

Description of job: The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) is a division operating within the National Security Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The NND performs research and development to detect, characterize, and monitor nuclear fuel cycle activities and nuclear explosions; develops concepts, approaches, and technologies to strengthen global security for nuclear and radiological material; and engages with federal agencies to enhance international nonproliferation regimes.

The Material Security and Counterproliferation (MSC) group within the NND is seeking applications for one or more senior chemists or chemical engineers to support design and installation of uranium chemistry and chemical processing R&D equipment ranging in size from laboratory to engineering scales. The candidate will be expected to mentor junior staff in the development of process flowsheets and processing equipment designs as well as R&D utilizing the equipment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for contributing to the conceptualizing and designing uranium science laboratories and engineering test capabilities essential to ensuring the maintenance and expansion of domestic uranium fuel cycle capabilities sufficiently to address current and future nonproliferation knowledge needs.
  • Efforts will focus on uranium chemistry, particularly chemical conversion and separations processes pertaining to the production of engineered forms of uranium and uranium compounds used across the uranium fuel cycle.
  • Activities will include mentoring of early- and mid-career staff, particularly in equipment design and operation.  Efforts may also include training of personnel from other DOE and US government agencies.
  • As part of design tasking, the successful candidate will be responsible for preparation of design documents (equipment drawings and specifications) for tracking execution schedules and costs, and for estimation of component procurement, installation, and operation costs.
  • Tasks will include selection and configuration of appropriate equipment, preparation of experiment and operating procedures, and preparation of training modules.
  • The successful candidate will be required to effectively interact with various personnel and sponsors, both within and outside of ORNL

Qualifications Required:

  • PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering and 6+ years of experience in uranium chemical processing or chemical research including pilot-scale R&D, or BS/MS degree with 15+ years of similar experience.
  • A strong grasp of the fundamentals of chemical process unit operations with emphasis on separations and chemical reaction science.
  • An understanding of fundamental chemical engineering thermodynamics.
  • The ability to work in chemical laboratory and processing environments with a high level of attention to detail and adherence to safe work practices that such activities demand.
  • Operational familiarity with uranium processing equipment at pilot or production scales.
  • The ability to conceive chemical process flowsheets and identify knowledge gaps within the fuel cycle as a whole.
  • Excellent communication skills, including verbal, presentation, and writing skills
