Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Chemical and Isotopics Mass Spectrometry (CIMS) Group seeks a nuclear analytical chemist to focus on nuclear analytical measurement protocols for isotopic and trace metal characterizations. This work will contribute toward research advancing nuclear material safeguard protocols and nonproliferation deficiencies. The position resides in the Nuclear Analytical Chemistry (NAC) Section, Chemicals Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at ORNL.
As part of our research team, you will own the analysis of our sample streams. We need someone who has an understanding of instrument fundamentals, including startup, operations, and/or method setup. Additionally, your involvement will extend to facilitating the formulation of new instrument methods to ensure consistent, high-quality data within our group. In this role, you will collaborate with the Group Leader and other team members to support sponsors and programs needs in a timely manner.
The (CIMS) group has extensive history in the analysis of material dating back to the early 1960s. The team is located in the Ultra Trace Forensic Science Center which houses a suite of sophisticated and modern laboratories. The facility contains over 10000 square feet of cleanroom space for separations and sample preparation. In addition, there are higher level laboratories across campus for various applications. The separation laboratories feature unique automated separation systems, and sample handling infrastructure. In addition, the group current has multiple MC-ICP-MS, TIMS, triple quad, glow discharge, IRMS, and a wide variety of sample induction system.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Independently perform established laboratory procedures to operate analytical instrumentation

Maintain and fix analytical equipment
-
Support staff in the development of new and novel analytical measurement protocols

Adhere to procedures accredited to ISO 17025 standard and build reports as required

Independently plan, design, and complete experiments
-
Preform initial QC reviews on self-produced data
-
Document laboratory activities in appropriate notebooks, Windows- based electronic spreadsheets, and/or word processing files. Maintain QA/QC control charts; prepare standards to assess QC performance

Help develop and present laboratory results for program reviews

Maintain effective communications concerning scientific efforts both internal and external to the laboratory, including publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of results at scientific meetings.
Basic Qualifications:
-
A B.S. degree in Chemistry, Geochemistry, Biology, Biochemistry Cosmochemistry, or Oceanography with at least 8 years of analytical laboratory experience; a M.S. degree in the same areas with 7 years of experience; or a Ph.D. in the same areas with 4 years of experience.

Experience maintaining and fixing analytical equipment
Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with inorganic sample preparations and chemical separations

Experience in solid, liquid, and gas sample introduction systems, collision cells, single and/or multiple detector instrumentation

Understanding of the maintenance of operation of mass spectrometry instrumentation

Experience preparing and handling mass spectrometry sample solutions

Ability to read schematics of electronic systems

Proven knowledge and experience in the safety practices associated with handling radioactive materials
-
Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
-
Ability to respond quickly to diverse and shifting demands with sudden deadlines on tight schedules

Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position.
