Overview: 

The Systems Engineering, Design, and Fabrication Group within the Research Reactors Division is responsible for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) configuration management program.  This group also provides technical support to operations and maintenance, and performs systems analysis. As a Nuclear Mechanical Engineer, you will maintain and perform design modifications for systems involving piping, supports, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, and related equipment. You are also responsible for design, procurement, fabrication and installation of critical plant structures and components. In this position you will lead field work and conduct trending and performance analysis of reactor systems. You will function as a cognizant system engineer for the assigned HFIR plant system in the HFIR System Engineering Program and DOE O 420.1 for the hazard category 1 nuclear facility and shall be qualified as a HFIR System Engineer in the RRD Training Program.

 

This position reports to the Systems Engineering Mechanical Group Lead. You may be required to provide work direction and guidance to technicians and craft personnel.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT

  • Prepares mechanical piping engineering designs for new installations and for replacement and upgrade of reactor structures, systems, and components. 
  • Applies relevant codes and standards, such as ASTM, ASME, AWS, GD&T, QS9000, ISO14001, etc.
  • Task-leads field installation and testing of design changes.
  • Prepares design specifications to define and determine performance criteria for component upgrades.
  • Writes material specifications and initiates procurement of nuclear safety-related materials.
  • Implements modifications in accordance with nuclear configuration control processes.
  • Prepares and maintains as-built documentation for assigned reactor systems, including engineering drawings, specifications, system descriptions, relevant databases, and labeling.

 

MAINTENANCE SUPPORT

  • Troubleshoots and analyzes system and component failures and develops corrective actions.
  • Provides written work package instructions to perform and document work.
  • Provides field technical support to craft supervisors and craft.
  • Provides input to preventive and predictive maintenance work instructions.

 

OPERATIONS SUPPORT

  • Performs operability assessments to determine equipment impact on HFIR operation.

 

SYSTEM ANALYSIS

  • Analyzes and trends results of preventive and predictive maintenance data.
  • Analyzes equipment performance history.
  • Performs overall systems health evaluation in accordance with HFIR's Reliability Program, which involves the following:
    • System Health Indicators
    • Identification of new and status of existing equipment vulnerabilities
    • HFIR 3-Year Planning Activities
    • Identification of Spare Parts deficiencies
    • Walk-Downs to Assess System Configuration and Material Condition
    • Assessment of open Modifications, Deviations, and Corrective Work Packages

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in mechanical engineering or related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and interpret requirements and technical specifications.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with an emphasis on process piping systems, design and fabrication of complex structures and components.
  • An understanding of reading and interpreting mechanical design drawings as well as understanding of GD&T principles from ANSI Y14.5.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical equipment problems and develop formal work package instructions for performance and documentation of repairs.
  • Familiarity with mechanical design and maintenance activities in a nuclear reactor operating environment.
  • Familiarity with the regulatory programs which define the HFIR work environment, including DOE Orders pertaining to conduct of operation and maintenance, OSHA requirements, and ASME standards.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory. 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

 

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
