Overview:

We are seeking a Nuclear Safety Analyst who will focus on performing analysis and unreviewed safety question (USQ) reviews for planned upgrades, projects, and other routine and emergent work that is the result of operating a DOE research reactor.

 

As part of our team, you will work in an analytical environment with other nuclear safety analysis, engineering, operations, and maintenance staff members, supporting cross-disciplinary teams. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse set of backgrounds both inside and outside the organization! The successful candidate will have a strong background in a relevant engineering field or nuclear operations experience. In this role, you should also be able to provide review and analysis for engineering projects and nuclear safety basis documents. Being part of our team also means having the flexibility to learn and provide analytical support for a variety of process systems and projects at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).

 

This position resides in the Nuclear Safety and Reactor Analysis Group within the Nuclear Facilities Safety Division of Environment, Safety, Health and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Preparation and maintenance of the HFIR safety basis documents, including the HFIR Safety Analysis Report (SAR), Cold Neutron Source Documented Safety Analysis (CS DSA), HFIR Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs), fuel shipping container Safety Analysis Reports for Packaging (SARP), and Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA).
  • Perform analysis, testing, and research to support the HFIR beryllium reflector replacement and reactor pressure vessel replacement projects.
  • Ensure technical compliance with 10 CFR Part 830 Subparts A and B, affecting reactor and facility safety, through implementation of ORNL Standards Based Management System (SBMS) and RRD procedures.
  • Application of the USQ process per ORNL SBMS and RRD procedures directly to the HFIR and Cold Source Facilities.
  • Perform research and/or testing needed to validate safety analysis assumptions or controls.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in engineering or a related field with 5 or more years of relevant experience.
  • At least 1 year of nuclear experience.
  • Must be organized, diligent, and sensitized to a nuclear safety culture.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • Familiarity and experience with 10 CFR 830 Subparts A and B and the USQ process.
  • Experience at a commercial, research, or naval reactor.
  • NRC/DOE regulatory experience and/or past interaction with regulators.
  • Experience using DOE toolbox or other relevant analysis codes and programs, such as ANSYS, COMSOL, MACCS2, MELCOR, ORIGEN, RELAP5, RISKMAN, SCALE, etc.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks on time and adapt to evolving needs.

 

Special Requirements:

  • L clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
