Overview: 

We are seeking an individual who will focus on research and development leading to deployable radiation detection applications in support of a broad user base, and support ongoing improvement and sustainment of existing detection platforms. This position resides in the Advanced Radiation Detection, Imaging, Data Science, and Applications (ARDIDSA) Group in the Nuclear Structure & Astroparticle Physics Section, Physics Division, Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

ARDIDSA focuses on the development and evaluation of novel and advanced radiation detector and non-destructive evaluation concepts for basic science, nonproliferation, national security, and intelligence organizations. The ARDIDSA group performs the research and technology development to evolve these advanced concepts from conception to demonstration or deployment with particular emphasis on sensitivity and specificity in actual field operations, including use of radiation transport codes to model these systems and analysis codes to isolate signals of interest.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Work with ORNL project controls and DOE program managers to identify tasking and plan scope, schedule, and budget for work to be conducted by ORNL researchers
  • Communicate research progress and financial status to DOE program managers at regular intervals and ensure deliverables are provided on schedule and budget
  • Work with research staff within ARDIDSA and throught ORNL to develop, characterize, test, and refine radiation detection systems for domestic and international deployment. This research involves working with detection hardware, software, commercial instruments, and systems-of-systems, requiring familiarity with the full range of disciplines involved in radiation detection applications.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in physics, nuclear engineering, computer science, or a related discipline a minimum of 4 years of professional experience
  • Background in radiation detection research, algorithm development, or test and evaluation

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading research projects, including tracking timeline and deliverables
  • Ability to oversee multiple simultaneous research projects, and communicate status to federal program managers
  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least one programming language related to scientific research or application development is desired, such as Python, C++, R, and/or C#
  • Familiarity with modeling & simulation codes for radiation detection applications, such as GADRAS, MCNP, SCALE, and/or Geant
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Special Requirements

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
