We have an opening for a Paralegal/Legal Assistant. Under general supervision, you will perform routine paralegal assignments in support of the attorneys in the Legal Directorate.  You will also be responsible for providing routine administrative support and contributing to a cohesive team that partners with a broad set of stakeholders across the laboratory to facilitate and advance the ORNL missions. 


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative support to attorneys by answering office phones, managing Outlook calendars, tracking attorney assignments, coordinating travel and arranging reimbursements, organizing files in accordance with established procedures, obtaining records, and reviewing documents.
  • Prepare internal/external correspondence, reports, and presentation materials in accordance with ORNL guidelines.
  • Draft/edit non-legal memoranda and correspondence in accordance with ORNL guidelines.
  • Perform legal research, including compiling, analyzing, and summarizing legal opinions and other legal material. 
  • Examine legal instruments or other documents to ensure completeness and accuracy, as well as conformance to applicable laws, rules, precedents, and office requirements; verify citations and legal references on prepared legal documents.
  • On own initiative, take action as authorized during attorneys’ absences to ensure requests for action/information are addressed; as needed, interpret requests, help implement action, and ensure that information is furnished.
  • Plan and coordinate on/off-site meetings.
  • Maintain office atmosphere in a professional manner; receive and assist visitors; establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external contacts.
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics, and ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.


Qualifications Required:

  • High School diploma and 5-7 years relevant experience and/or Associate Degree and 2-4 years relevant experience.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent work schedule during core hours to meet the needs of staff.
  • High degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
  • Knowledge of legal research tools sufficient to perform basic legal research, as well as effective oral and written communications skills necessary to interact with visitors, coworkers, and clients.
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under demanding deadlines in a professional manner and have a strong dedication to deliver extraordinary customer service.

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Graduation from a two-year program of study in paralegal studies or an Associate degree and a minimum of five years of paralegal/legal assistant experience, or a four-year degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of three years of paralegal/legal assistant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) or Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE) certification. 
  • Experience with LexisNexis and SharePoint.
  • A passion for and/or experience in one or more of ORNL's broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines.
