Overview:

The Geospatial Science and Human Security Division (GSHSD) is seeking qualified applicants for a Photogrammetry Research Professional position within our Remote Sensing Group (RSG). RSG is part of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and seeks to hire qualified candidates to support photogrammetry and 3D computer vision research initiatives with emphasis on remote sensing and image analysis. Under the guidance of research staff, the selected applicant(s) will take roles on multidisciplinary teams supporting cutting-edge research and engineering with large-scale distributed geospatial workflows that require GPU-based high-performance computing (HPC) across multiple network domains.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

RSG is seeking an early-career researcher who will focus on the design and implementation of photogrammetry and 3D computer vision algorithms to support high-volume and high-throughput scientific data applications, primarily with remote sensing sensors. The proposed solutions will include GPU-based HPC solutions that can be applicable for several geospatially focused research and development projects in energy, transportation, national security, and other cross-disciplinary geospatial domains. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Contribute to the research, development, and production of workflows using remote sensing imagery for photogrammetry and 3D computer vision solutions.
  • Implement, enhance, and/or develop novel photogrammetry and 3D computer vision algorithms for large-scale geospatial workflows suitable for GPU-based acceleration in HPC or cloud environments.
  • Collaborate in a team environment with multi-disciplinary technical staff.
  • Communicate to broader technical community through scholarly products such as patents, papers, proposals, presentations, and reports.

Basic Requirements

  • Ph.D. with recent graduates or 2 years relevant experience, a M.S. with 2-7 years experiences, or a B.S. with 4-8 years of experience and a focus on photogrammetry, engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, or related discipline.
  • A proven track record of scholarship (e.g. publications, patents, copyrights, etc.).
  • At least 2 years of experience developing software and/or hardware related to photogrammetry, image processing, or computer vision.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a demonstrated leadership ability and a strong commitment to a teaming environment. 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with geographical information systems (GIS).
  • Experience with stereo imagery, LIDAR, and other 3D sensing capabilities.
  • Proficient in a Linux OS environment.
  • Familiarity with the basics of machine learning and high-performance computing (HPC).
  • Experience with the following languages: C/C++, Python, R, C#, Java.
  • Experience with the following software: Socet GXP, ENVI, or Pix4D.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Highly motivated to learn new topics and skills and develop innovative products.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
