The Microbial Ecology and Physiology Group is seeking a microbiologist/microbial geneticist to work on a multi-institutional project aimed at improving both new and existing industrial microorganisms for the production of renewable chemicals. As part of the Host Onboarding Team within the Agile BioFoundry, the primary objective will be to generate genetic tools for a range of microorganisms that have the potential to serve as host chassis systems for industrial bioprocessing. Examples of the genetic tools needed include methods for efficient DNA transformation, a range of replicating and non-replicating plasmid vectors, efficient gene integration systems for genome engineering, and the capability for genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9.


Major Duties / Responsibilities

You will apply skills in vector design, gene cloning, synthetic biology, physiological characterization, and systems biology techniques to develop several bacterial strains for potential use as industrial biocatalysts. You will also design and execute laboratory experiments, maintain detailed and accurate records, and analyze quantitative data, and be expected and mentored to communicate results to the scientific community through presentations and publications that demonstrate a strong potential for continued research success and career advancement. The Agile BioFoundry is a multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary project that requires a team-oriented, collaborative spirit.



A Ph.D. in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field is required. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.


The following skills are required for this position:


  • Expertise in microbial molecular genetics
  • Experience with microbial cultivation and strain characterization
  • Effective writing and presentation skills, demonstrated by a strong publication record from previous research
  • Desire to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team


The following skills are preferred for this position:


  • Experience in Gram-positive microbial genetics
