Overview:

 

The Power Exhaust and Particle Control (PEPC) group of the Fusion Energy Division (FED) seeks applicants to perform plasma-material interaction (PMI) science on domestic and international fusion experiments. The PEPC group carries out experimental and simulation work to develop power exhaust, PMI science, and particle control solutions and the accompanying physics basis for a fusion reactor.

 

In this role you will report to the Power Exhaust and Particle Control Group Leader in the Burning Plasma Foundations Section of the Fusion Energy Division and will interface closely with the ORNL FED PMI Science Lead and ORNL staff within the Material Sciences and Technology Division to develop the knowledge basis to enable the next generation of plasma-facing components (PFCs) for an anticipated fusion pilot plant.

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

 

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead investigations using empirical and/or computational methods to develop an improved technical basis for the choice of heat- and neutron-tolerant, next-generation plasma facing materials
  • Interface with ORNL PMI/materials science experts to develop and execute proposals for experimental/simulation studies of PMI effects in relevant materials on toroidal fusion confinement and linear devices worldwide
  • Produce high impact publications in key peer-reviewed journals, and conference presentations on fusion PMI topics. 
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

  • Have, or expected to have within 12 months, a Ph.D. in Plasma Physics, Material Science, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field completed within the last 5 years.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Experience in PMI experimental science, diagnostics, and/or simulations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support regular interactions with fellow research staff, peer reviewers, research sponsors, and to prepare reports, proposals, publications.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve technical problems for research and development projects with limited oversight.

 

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
