Postdoctoral Research Associate - Accelerator Physics

Date: Sep 2, 2021

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 6166

Overview:

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to study dynamics of high intensity accelerator beams. This work will address the limitation presented by uncontrolled beam loss to performance of high power accelerators such as the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). This position resides in the Accelerator Physics Groups in the Accelerator Science & Technology Section, Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Science Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct experiments on an accelerator test stand to understand intensity effects in the SNS front end.
  • Carry out measurement and analysis of high dimensional (6D) beam distributions, as well as develop improved procedures.
  • Perform simulations to understand beam evolution for low- and medium- energy beams in the SNS and test stand experiment.
  • Conduct studies to reveal and resolve sources of discrepancy between simulation and measurement.
  • Apply knowledge gained through test stand measurements to understand dynamics of the SNS.
  • Participate in scientific conferences, workshops, meetings and publishes results in the form of SNS technical notes and memos, workshop and conference proceedings, and scientific journals
  • Ensure compliance with Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) and QA requirements.
  • As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct, and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Physics or related discipline completed within the last five years.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with modern programming languages, particularly Python
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate research results through reports, publications and presentations.
  • Experience working with an accelerator, such as experience working in a control room, conducting accelerator-based experiments, and performing accelerator simulations

About Neutron Sciences Directorate:

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States’ highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world’s most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source.  Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists.  HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation.  To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to http://neutrons.ornl.gov.
