We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Materials for Advanced Manufacturing Group in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  The Postdoctoral Research Associate will focus on understanding the process-microstructure-property relationships in steel components fabricated via different additive manufacturing (AM) processes such as binder jet AM, laser powder bed AM and wire arc AM. A background in physical metallurgy is preferred. Strong materials characterization skills are required.


As part of our research team, you will engage with researchers with various backgrounds such as materials science, heat transfer, and robotics along with close interaction with industry partners. These engagements will play a vital role in developing your interpersonal skills and network across academia and industries. You will also be involved in proposal writing with our scientists while taking the lead in publishing high impact papers that are important for careers in both academia and industry.


Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Work within a committed team of engineers and scientists to fabricate and characterize steels via different additive manufacturing technologies
  • Utilize techniques such as optical microscopy, computed tomography (CT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for microstructural characterization of the materials
  • Conduct mechanical testing of materials using techniques such as but not limited to hardness measurements, monotonic tensile testing, fracture toughness measurements, and fatigue testing
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A background in additive manufacturing technologies such as binder jet AM, laser powder bed AM is required
  • Proficiency in characterization techniques such as SEM, EBSD, TEM, and XCT is required
  • A thorough understanding of steel microstructures is preferred
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
